“Childfree by choice” is how I describe myself. I adore kids and have a niece and nephew who I would gladly take a bullet for. I just never really envisioned myself as a mom. I considered having a baby at one point in my life, but in hindsight I realize it’s just not for me.
I have found that my choice not to be a mother leaves some people confused. And I will admit that explaining my reasons over and over again can be tiring. That is why I so appreciated Jen Kirkman’s thoughts about her life without children. She is a stand-up comedian as well as a writer for Chelsea Lately. Her book, I Can Barely Take Care of Myself: Tales from a Happy Life Without Kids was a relief to read for me. She understands and can see the humor in the constant surprise that a woman receives when they make the decision not to have a child. Kirkman has found herself dealing with many of the same conversations that I have, so it was fun to find out how she handles these encounters.
I believe this is an important book not only for people like me, but also for anyone who wonders about those of us who are happy and content with our lives that do not include our own children. I should also mention that it is hilarious!
The book can be found in our biography section upstairs.
