One of the great things about working at this public library is that we can use our creativity to devise new display ideas for our patrons. Some of us (Sarah Gardner) are more creative than others, but we all work together to make these masterpieces happen. This week nostalgia is our theme.
August 10th-17th is Elvis Week where fans from all over the world flock to Memphis to tour Graceland, see impersonators of the King perform, and attend the candlelight vigil on August 15th. The LCOPL adores Elvis so we have two displays in memory of him. His movies are available for check-out in the foyer (including the ’68 Comeback Special), and near the circulation desk we have a collection of his music on CD and books about Elvis.
With the release of The Smurfs 2 a couple of weeks ago, one of the LCOPL staff made a journey to her mother’s house and hit the Smurf bonanza. We have a display of Smurftatsic proportions in the display case near the Young Adult section. Mushroom houses, a snail cart, and maybe a glimpse of the bumbling Gargamel can be had for the next couple of weeks. And yes kids, Smurfs were around back in the 1980’s when some of us “old” people were growing up!
Last but not least…everyone in Oxford knows that it is almost Ole Miss Football time! We put together a tailgating/UM Football history extravaganza in the foyer. Start planning your Grove menus early this year and relive past football seasons. We can’t wait until the first home game on September 7th. Hotty Toddy!!!
